How Important Are Domain Names in SEO?

You’re starting a business, you’ve come up with a great name for it and now you want to set up a website for it. But are you doing things in the right order? Having an online presence seo expert is vital these days and even the smallest of firms is usually involved in some sort of digital project.

This means it is increasingly important to stand out from the crowd when it comes to the internet so thinking about how you can boost your digital reach needs to start before you’ve even come up with a name for your firm. You can do this by naming your company after your website and not the other way around. This is easier to do than you might think. Firstly, have a brainstorm over possible search terms which people might enter when looking for the kind of service your business will provide. Then use something like the Google Keyword Tool to get an idea of how many people are searching for these phrases. It’s not an exact science, but it will give you a feel of the kind of interest there is in that particular area.

If you find all your terms are returning low search volumes, don’t worry – either have a look at the volumes for the related terms suggested by Google or repeat the process with a new set of phrases. Once you’ve settled on a term which has a high volume of searches and would make a snappy business name the next step is to register a domain. You’re likely to face a little bit of disappointment here – given the sheer number of websites there are it is increasingly hard to get that perfect domain name. But don’t be disheartened – most domain name providers will offer a range of extensions so your chosen name may be available as a.net rather than a.com.

They will also suggest names similar to the one you’ve entered and you may want to consider taking one of those. You may decide to go back to the Google Keywords Tool again to see how the suggestions fare in terms of search queries and spending some time refining your options will do no harm at all. So you’ve registered a domain name, now what? Well, you call your business the same thing. Why? Two reasons – the first is that your website will reflect your brand exactly, but of course you could have achieved that by naming your website after your company.

The second, and most important reason, is you have started down the road of search engine optimisation before you’ve even begun building your website. It is easier to rank highly in Google when your domain name is similar to the keywords you are targeting and if you know a lot of people are searching for those keywords, you can expect to get traffic when your SEO efforts start to pay off. You don’t have to do any of this, of course but by working out your domain name before your business name you can give yourself a head start online.
